Book Review

As you may know, I'm reading this book. It's called Matilda and it's written by Roald Dahl!

Plot
The book i'm reading, is about a five year old girl, Matilda; she’s not like other five year old girls. The story is about her life in school and how he manages to live with her crazy family and her evil headmistress, also called the Trunchinbull. The book is exciting because you never know what happens next.  But it’s not original there are so many other books that are almost exactly like this one. Roald Dahl’s books are all the same, and this one is no exception. There is not really a sub-plot. The only thing that might be a sup-plot is when Matilda’s friend Lavender adds a small animal in the Trunchinbull’s glass, but that’s only a few pages in the book so I don’t think it’s a sub-plot.

Setting
The story takes place in England, somewhere near London, in a small village. But I have no idea when it takes place. But it’s probably around 1960. The village is like a normal suburb. I get the feeling that it’s not really a nice place to live because it lives so many bad people there, but it does sound like a city that is for real. It’s not a fantasy world. But the author has not written much about it because it doesn’t really matter where it is. The story could take place in U.S.A, India or even here in Sweden. The writer really makes it feel like I’m there, watching Matilda. I love the way he does it. He describes every detail. Clothes, face, everything!

Characters
Matilda is the main character. But Miss Honey and The Trunchinbull are almost main characters. They are in the book almost all the time. They are, just like everyone else, very well drawn.  Miss Honey is realistic, so is The Trunchinbull. But Matilda has magic powers. She can move things with her eyes, which is not realistic if you ask me. But that changes in the end. My favorite character is probably Bruce Bogtrotter. He’s a boy in Matilda’s school. He’s not in the book much but he managed to eat a whole chocolate cake. And that makes him my favorite!

This is the kind of cake that the Trunchinbull made Bruce eat, chocolate cake!

Theme
I don’t think it’s only one main theme in this book. I think it’s some hatred and some revenge but the author probably wrote it to amuse people. That’s revealed in the whole book. She talks about how her parents misbehaved when she was younger and how she hates her headmistress. But still, it’s not an original book. But the author did a very good job and he made it stand out a little bit.

Target audience/ Genre
This book is probably for young teenagers, or kids. I think between 8 and 14. It’s quite easy to read but I think it’s the story and the characters that will interest the readers and make them want to read more and more. As I said before, this book is written to amuse people, so the genre is probably humor. That's a very popular genre, that's one of the reasons it's not original

Personal response
I really liked this book. The main reason is the characters, they are so well described and they make the story even better! But there are many other reasons; I loved how I found out that two of the characters were related, like a total surprise! I loved how the teacher, Miss Honey, taught the children. Some parts that I like are the parts when Matilda makes the Trunchinbull or her dad look silly. But I have to say that my absolute favorite is when the Trunchinbull makes Bruce eat a whole chocolate cake, and he actually does it!  I don’t like the part when the Trunchinbull accuses Matilda for something she hadn’t done. That makes me angry because I don’t like the Trunchinbull, but I do like Matilda! This book is a bit similar to other books by Roald Dahl. I think all of his books have the same genre, but they all have different stories. But it’s hard not to love Roald Dahl’s books, I really recommend this book. So if you haven’t read it already, do it!

I give this book 2 thums up! Great job Roald!

My favorit part!

Posetive quote“But does this not intrigue you,” Miss Honey said, “that a little five-year-old child is reading long adult novels by Dickens and Hemingway? Doesn’t that make you jump up and down with excitement?”
This part takes place in Matilda’s home when Miss Honey talks to Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood about Matilda. I like it because Matilda’s parents are really that stupid. They don’t get anything. It’s almost unbelievable! But Miss Honey is wonderful! She's my favorit character! She's beautiful, kind and it seems like she's a great teacher! She reminds me of one of my teachers! Wich one is a secret ;)
The story is a bit boring , it just keeps on going but I think it will start to get interesting now when the headmistress “the Trunchbull” is in the story.
The Trunchbull is a really big woman and everyone is afraid of her, but I don't blame them, so would I if she were my headmistress!

This genre is pretty normal, it’s a funny book and it’s easy to read and understand! I think it’s written for people that are around 9-13 years old but I’ve got some problems with reading so I choose it anyway. It reminds me of when I was around Matilda’s age, I learned to read when I was 5, but I was not like Matilda! I read books with colors and big letters, not adult books.

Fun and interesting...

..that's my fist impressions!
I really like this book! It’s funny and it’s kind of interesting. I don’t know when it takes place and I don’t know where it is! But if I have to guess, I think it's in London, I've read the book before in Swedish´but it was about 3 years ago so I don't remember that much!
The story:
The story is about a girl called Matilda, she’s the main character and a very smart girl. Matilda is really talented, before she turned 5 she had already read long grownup books. But her family is not like that. Her parents are really mean and they don’t like when she reads, they only want her to watch TV and sit around like her brother. But Matilda is starting to get tired of them, especially her father, so the starts to punish him but it doesn’t get that much better.
What will happen after this is just to wait and see!

Matilda

The book I’m reading is called Matilda. Roald Dahl wrote it and it was published  1988 in London.
